WARNING

Immediately after any kind of heat treatment (baths, massage, compress), the joint should be kept moving to avoid congestion. Never massage directly over a swollen joint.

Methods of use

As an excellent initial detoxifying treatment for all types of arthritis, add 3 drops each of fennel, carrot, or celery seed, and juniper oil (or up to 10 drops of any of the above detoxifying oils) to the bathwater, together with two handfuls of Epsom salt and one of rock salt. Repeat daily for two weeks. Oils (see below) for soothing pain or increasing mobility are also beneficial used in baths.

Make a massage oil to stimulate greater mobility and ease pain by mixing 7 to 10 drops each of lavender, rosemary, and marjoram oil with 2fl oz/50ml of a vegetable carrier oil. Rub into the area very gently twice daily.

To ease inflammation and pain, apply a cold compress with a few drops of lavender, and chamomile or yarrow oil. To reduce stiffness, a hot compress may be used with oils such as rosemary, marjoram, or black pepper.
